IMPORTANT UPDATE ON STUDENT-FAN BEHAVIOR AND CONSEQUENCES

December 8, 2021

This week the Executive Committee of the CPIHL took what we believe was appropriate action to protect the health and safety of our hockey players and to send a clear message that we will no longer tolerate student-fan behavior that violates our Code of Conduct. We have suspended for four games each the student-fan sections from two clubs: the combined Hempfield/Manheim Twp. club and Hershey.

The EC voted unanimously to suspend these student sections after coins were thrown on the ice during game action. This behavior could have easily resulted in a significant injury to a player or referee who skated over the coin. It is outrageous behavior that cannot and will not be tolerated. The coin-throwing was followed by obscene and abusive language at both games.

Let us be clear: The instances of unacceptable student-spectator behavior are sharply on the rise this season and is far from limited to just these two teams. And we are prepared to take similar action moving forward should that be necessary. It was for this very reason why the EC called an emergency meeting of our 10 Bears Division clubs just last week – to reinforce our existing rules and to stress the need for all of our clubs to crack down on dangerous and lewd behavior.

Here is what we are routinely seeing at our rinks this season:

  • Objects being thrown on the ice during game play
  • Foul and abusive language against other spectators and against players and officials
  • Taunting that occurs between fan sections during the game that then turns into physical violence in the parking lots after the game
  • Students showing up impaired by drugs or alcohol
  • Vandalism of rink property
  • Students who tell club officials who are wearing the yellow security jackets to ‘f-off’ or who ‘flip them off’ when asked to control their behavior
  • The league even had to postpone a game when contacted by local police who had been made aware of a threat involving physical violence between fan bases

The on-ice official who filed his report after one of the games where coins were thrown onto the ice wrote the following:

As an 11-year veteran official, I have never experienced this kind of behavior in the hundreds of games I have officiated. This behavior is not only disrespectful to the game of hockey, but is extremely dangerous behavior that could have caused potential SERIOUS injury to officials and players on the ice. This behavior CAN NOT BE TOLERATED BY USA HOCKEY OR THE CPIHL.

We agree.

We must and will demand more from those who come into our games. The students who misbehave know they are not on school property and therefore feel they can do whatever they wish with no repercussions. No longer. We are saying enough is enough. We also will hold club leadership accountable. They have been required to submit a written plan detailing how they intend to prevent similar problems from happening again.

We realize that not all students behave this way, and we feel badly that they are being penalized due to the actions of others. But it is going to take pressure from other students to get the bad actors to stop their behavior. That is why we invited team captains to join our recent call to ask that they be part of this process to improve student-fan behavior. After all, they stand to lose the most. We told them that the league wants large, loud and engaged student sections cheering them on. It’s what makes high school hockey so special and differentiates it from travel hockey. But those student-fan sections must follow our playing rules and Code of Conduct which can be found on our website and which clearly state our expectations for fan behavior.

We already have heard from parents of these two clubs who have said we are taking a “safe gathering environment away from them on a Friday night” and that they would “feel better knowing the children are engaging in a safe activity” at the rink. There was nothing safe about what took place at these games. The actions of those who threw the coins – and of their friends who laughed and looked the other way – jeopardized the health and safety of their classmates playing in the game. Until we hold our fan sections accountable for their behavior, which is the primary reason for these sanctions, we do not see anything changing.

COVID-19 Protocols for 2021-22 Season

The CPIHL is excited to return for the 2021-22 season.

As we have seen with other fall high school sports, including football, games continue to be impacted by COVID-19. It is not unreasonable to anticipate the virus will also impact our ice hockey season to some degree.

For that reason, we have stressed with all of our hockey clubs the need for communication throughout the season. Each club has been instructed to identify a single point of contact within their organization that families can contact to share important health updates about their player, including those who test positive for COVID-19 or who have potentially been exposed. Likewise, the CPIHL has established a single contact person on the league Executive Committee who our clubs can contact directly with any urgent updates.

The CPIHL will follow federal and state rules and guidelines which may impact crowd size, rules for indoor gatherings, game play, etc.

CPIHL announces 2021-22 season

CPIHL Board of Directors Meets in Hummelstown, 5/13/21

At its meeting of the league Board of Directors May 13 in Hummelstown, the CPIHL announced its intent to play a full season beginning October 2021. This was the first in-person meeting of the BOD in well over a year.

Clubs are required to submit their "Form 1s" -- declaring their rosters and level of play -- by August 1, 2021.

A full middle school season is scheduled to start in mid-October, with JV/Varsity seasons beginning shortly after.

CPIHL Welcomes Wilson Hockey Back to the League!

The CPIHL is pleased to welcome Wilson Ice Hockey back to the league! The Bulldogs last played with us five seasons ago. The club has a rich tradition in the CPIHL dating back to our earliest seasons in the 90's. Like Twin Valley, Wilson plays its home games at BodyZone.

Always exciting to see the CPIHL grow!

Flyers Cup 2020 Update

Please see below for a message from the Flyers Cup Committee.

The CPIHL fully supports this decision, but shares in the disappointment that our two clubs that advanced to compete in the finals - Hershey & Palmyra - will not be able to determine a champion on the ice. That said, we are incredibly proud to know that both their team names will forever be engraved on the Flyers Cup!

Palmyra & Hershey Advance to Flyers Cup Final Four!

Palmyra Cougars players check out the Flyers Cup, which was on display Monday night at Klick Lewis Arena

It was a big night for the CPIHL again in the quarterfinals of the Flyers Cup invitational tournament Wednesday night!

Palmyra defeated Springfield 4-1. The Cougars will play WC Bayard Rustin Monday night in the semifinals.

Hershey defeated Strath Haven 5-0, for their second shutout of the Flyers Cup this year. The Trojans advance to play West Chester East on Monday in the semis.

With wins by both Palmyra and Hershey, it would be an all-CPIHL final!

Also tonight, Lower Dauphin, who was playing without several key players due to illness and injury, hung tough against WC East but lost 5-3. It marks the end of a terrific season for the Falcons.

important player safety information for CPIHL players, coaches & fans

This summer, USA Hockey adopted a Declaration of Player Safety, Fair Play and Respect for the 2019-20 season. Accepted practices such as "finishing your check" will no longer be acceptable in certain situations. We encourage all players and fans to watch the below video with examples of what is and is not acceptable. The CPIHL reviewed these new rules with our head coaches across the league during a recent meeting.

Learn Why "Banging the Boards" to Celebrate May Now Draw A Penalty

In an effort to eliminate taunting from hockey, USA Hockey will now assess a bench minor penalty if players "bang the boards" after a body check, regardless of whether the check was penalized or not. Click the link to read about this new rule interpretation.

CPIHL WELCOMES SUSQUEHANNA VALLEY STAMPEDE!

At the April meeting of the CPIHL Board of Directors, the league voted unanimously to welcome the Susquehanna Valley Stampede to the league. Formerly with the Northeast PA Scholastic Hockey League, the Stampede rosters players from several schools in the Sunbury/Lewisburg region. While they practice at a rink in Sunbury, the Stampede will play its home games at Twin Ponds East. The Board vote allows the Stampede to play on a one-season trial, which will be reevaluated in early 2020. It is exciting to see our league grow. WELCOME TO THE CPIHL!

Hershey Falls Short in Bid for Flyers Cup -- Freer, Bowman & Larkin Win Tournament Honors

The Hershey Trojans' thrilling run to the Flyers Cup Championships fell short, losing to top-seeded West Chester Bayard Rustin, 5-1. The Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia saw a strong turnout from Hershey fans and the underdog Trojans played the favorites tough, trailing just 3-1 after two periods. While it wasn't the result they were looking for, Hershey gave the CPIHL plenty of thrills during their postseason run!

CPIHL Remembers Kelly Soule

The CPIHL is mourning a member of our hockey family. Kelly Soule, mother of Shamrocks player Michael Soule, lost her battle with cancer. Kelly was a proud 'hockey mom' who was so excited that Michael was drafted for the 2019 All-Star game. She was able to see him in his All-Star jersey. The hockey community is a strong one that comes together at times of celebration and times of great sadness. A moment of silence was held at our varsity games, including this one between the Shamrocks and Twin Valley. The CPIHL sends thoughts and prayers to Michael and his father, George.

The 2018-19 season marks a huge milestone for the CPIHL, our teams and our players -- 25 years of scholastic ice hockey! And our league has never been stronger. This year will feature nearly 45 Varsity, Junior Varsity and Middle School teams.

For the first time in our 25 year history, the league now will feature games played between our "pure" teams and teams that feature skaters from more than one school. It is a change embraced league-wide that will result in exciting new matchups and a chance for our fans to see talented players they have not had a chance to watch in previous seasons.

We really like our 25th Anniversary logo and hope you do, too. Now available for purchase is Limited Edition 25th Anniversary CPIHL apparel. Click on the logo to be directed to our online store!
